What kind of a Nation are we? Are we the type of Nation that plays lip service to injustice and oppression when it is in our own backyard? Surely we have called out rogue players on the world stage whom we deem as oppressive (South Africa), or a place where injustice runs rampant (Taliban). Yet, right in your own backyard, we are pretty sure that there are blatant acts of oppression or injustice happening right under your nose and it goes either unnoticed or reported for the most part. For example, right here in Southwest Florida or as is otherwise know as Paradise, some members of the underclass would want you to know that you do not have to travel outside of the United States to witness these acts.
Take the most recent case of police officers beating down a young college student simply because he had the nerve to run when stopped for speeding in Collier County Florida. As the story unfolds as shown on the police dashboard mounted video, after a chase which reached speeds of up to 110+ miles per hour, the victim, a 21 year old Latino man is seen getting off of HS motorcycle with his hands up high in the air, surrendering to police. The next thing you see and hear is a police officer with a gun in one hand, rush the young cyclist screaming, I will kill you mother fucker, and punch him square in the jaw. As the victim is knocked down, the officer swarms and proceeds to continue to pummel him. Other officers are seen arriving at the scene and joining the first officer gone mad in pummeling the victim.
Of course, the police report filed by these outstanding men in green, bares no similarity to the images scene on the video by your own eyes. At this point, if you were around for the Rodney King riots of Los Angeles in the early nineties, you are left wondering if this case goes to trial here on the East coast, will our citizens let these bums get off. Given the high profile cases that have been publicized on national TV by the Reverend Al Sharpton and movie producer Tyler Perry on the disappearance of individuals in the custody of CCSO, you would hope that out amongst us there are individuals who are fed up with the obvious abuse of power.
So even after all these years, we are left with the empty feeling of powerlessness and frustration. Is it really true that our lives are any less valuable than that of people who just happen to have a fairer complexion? Or are we as guilty at the Police gang members who only get away with their cowardly acts because we, the people they have sworn to serve and protect continue to turn and look the other way and let them get away with crimes. Some might use the simplistic argument that these guys put their lives on the line each and everyday and that they are doing a job the we do not care to do. To that I say rubbish, and I say if that were your son, daughter, sister or brother getting the beat down, would you still feel the same? I think not, but then again the cowards will turn and ask "What you Talkin bout Willis?"
Let me know what you think?
